Two San Antonio-based companies — pipeline and terminal operator NuStar Energy LP (NYSE: NS) and banking giant USAA — made Fortune magazine's most recent list of 25 Best Large Workplaces in Texas, the only two Alamo City corporations to make the grade.

NuStar Energy, which ranked No. 12, is one of only two energy companies on the list. This is NuStar's fifth consecutive year on the list.

The Fortune Best Workplaces in Texas designation is based on employee feedback in the form of more than 1 million responses to a 60-question employee experience survey curated by Great Place to Work. Only companies headquartered in Texas that already have Great Place to Work certification are eligible for the list.

The survey found 90% of NuStar's nearly 1,200 employees say NuStar is a great place to work, compared to 57% of employees at the average U.S. company. NuStar President and CEO Brad Barron said much of the "caring and sharing" culture found at NuStar was created and fostered by Chairman of the Board, philanthropist and businessman Bill Greehey.

NuStar Energy was founded in 2001 and is one of the largest independent liquids terminal and pipeline operators in the United States, and operates in both the U.S. and Mexico with 10,000 miles of pipeline and 63 terminal and storage facilities for crude oil, refined products, renewable fuels, ammonia and specialty liquids. The company's total storage capacity is 49 million barrels, and its adjusted net income soared 36% between 2021 and 2022.

USAA, headquartered in San Antonio and founded in 1922 — with 35,797 employees across six sites — also featured prominently on the list at No. 15. According to Great Place to Work's public report on the companies who made the list, 82% of employees at USAA say it is a great place to work, compared to 57% of employees at the average company based in the United States.
