The South Texas Drilling Roundup is a weekly review of drilling permit applications filed with the Railroad Commission of Texas over a 67-county area of South Texas.

  • Date Range: April 4 to April 11
  • Permit Applications: 55
  • Companies Filing: 26
  • Most Active Company: Marathon Oil EF LLC and Trinity Operating LLC, each with 6 applications
  • Most Active County: Dimmit County and La Salle County, each with 10 applications
New and Noteworthy:

Houston-based Marathon Oil, which has a regional office in San Antonio, filed six applications in the last week to drill new horizontal oil or gas wells in Atacosta and Lavaca counties. The company aims to drill four new oil wells in the Eagle Ford Shale, just over 20 miles southeast of the nearest town of Pleasanton. Each will have a total depth of 22,000 feet. It's also planning two more wells — designated as either oil or gas — in Lavaca County just under a mile northeast of Shiner, each with a total depth of 26,000 feet.

La Salle and Dimmit Counties were the most active counties for applications in the past week, seeing six new applications each.

San Antonio-based oil and gas exploration company GulfTex Energy LLC was among those applying for a drilling permit in La Salle County. In a document submitted to the Railroad Commission Friday, the company filed for permission to drill a new oil or gas well in the Eagle Ford Shale with a completion depth of 10,000 feet. Its intended location is just over 15 miles southwest of Cotulla.
