South Texas Drilling Roundup: Marathon Oil looks to drill 9 new Karnes County wells

Houston-based Marathon Oil is still drilling in the Eagle Ford Shale.

The South Texas Drilling Roundup is a weekly review of drilling permit applications filed with the Railroad Commission of Texas over a 67-county area of South Texas.

New and Noteworthy:

Houston-based Marathon Oil (NYSE: MRO) applied in the last week to drill nine new oil wells in Karnes County. According to Texas Railroad Commission documents, three will be drilled in the Eagle Ford Shale about half a mile northwest of Karnes City, with completion depths of 15,000 feet.

Four more wells will be drilled about 7.4 miles southwest of Karnes City, while the remaining two will be drilled about 3 miles southwest of Karnes City. These will also have completion depths of 15,000 feet.

Railroad Commission documents note that all nine wells must comply to state requirements regarding isolating potential flow zones or any zone with corrosive formation fluids.

San Antonio-headquartered exploration company BlackBrush Oil and Gas filed to horizontally drill a new oil well in the Austin Chalk in Karnes County. It will be located just over 3 miles northwest of Falls City with a completion depth of 10,500 feet.
