Google has cut a check for another San Antonio business.
Google has awarded local startup hub Geekdom a $20,000 grant to support its current Geekdom Incubator program and July 26 Incubator Showcase, Geekdom announced July 20. The Geekdom Incubator is an eight-week program the company offers to help first-time founders and early-stage entrepreneurs refine and grow their startup ideas.
Fifteen companies are in the Geekdom Incubator Q2 2023 cohort, which launched on May 25. Geekdom CEO Charles Woodin said the $20,000 grant will enable Geekdom to deliver free, quality programming and resources to the cohort, helping fulfill its goal "to support these founders, so they find success and become active participants in San Antonio's growing startup community."
The grant also helps Google achieve its objectives under its newly minted Google for Startups program.
"At Google, we recognize the importance of supporting thriving, diverse and inclusive startup communities. Working with Geekdom and this cohort is an extension of what we're already doing through programs like Google for Startups to connect startups with the right people, products and best practices to enable growth," Google engineer and Geekdom board of directors member Sean Patterson said.
Geekdom's announcement comes just a week after San Antonio-based data streamlining company DataScope announced it received a $150,000 grant from the Google for Startups Latino Founders Fund.
Since its 2020 launch, Google for Startups has invested in nearly 230 founders who have gone on to raise over $190 million in follow-on funding, according to Google's website. This includes 14 North American startups, two of which operate in San Antonio – Bunker Labs, a national nonprofit supporting veteran entrepreneurs, and Austin-based accelerator Capital Factory.
