Carvana Co., an e-commerce company for used cars, has expanded its same-day vehicle-delivery service to the Sacramento area.

Tempe, Arizona-based Carvana (NYSE: CVNA) operates a huge center in Rocklin that refurbishes cars. That center recently added a market operation hub that allows it to sell that inventory locally, said Carvana spokesperson Veronica Cardenas.

“It allows us to deliver cars directly from that site,” she said.

Users in the Sacramento region, or roughly 100 miles from Rocklin, can go online and select cars. For the ones that are in Rocklin, there will be a “get it today” banner.

Generally, if a user buys early in the morning they can get the car that day. Otherwise, it will be delivered in 24 hours.

The Rocklin site has more than 10,000 parking spaces, and it is a major service hub for Northern California for Carvana. The Rocklin site doesn’t have one of Carvana’s car vending machines, which are multistory glass-walled buildings that deliver sold cars to their buyers. The nearest vending machine is in Daly City. The Rocklin location probably isn’t a candidate for a vending machine, Cardenas said.

All Carvana car shopping and ordering is done online, and it offers financing. The sold cars in the Sacramento region are delivered to the customer. Customers don’t go to the Rocklin service location.

More than 450 people currently work at the Rocklin location and Carvana is hiring. At full operation, Rocklin could have about 850 employees, she said. Generally, the cars at the Rocklin shop are from somewhere nearby. If people order a specific car or model, those cars or trucks could be sourced from Carvana sites in Tempe or Utah, for example, and those cars wouldn’t have the “get it today” banner.

The same-day service started in Carvana’s home state of Arizona, and it has expanded to cities in Ohio, Indiana, North Carolina, Georgia, Texas, Florida, Alabama and Oklahoma.

Carvana started planning for a car inspection and servicing site in Rocklin in late 2020. In 2021, the company paid about $16.2 million for a 118-acre site on Cincinnati Avenue outside Rocklin where an inspection center was planned. It completed the center two years ago.
