Electric vehicle company Tesla Inc. is seeking expedited approval in Sacramento to open a private repair depot for its cars and trucks in an industrial section of the city.

The application, filed with the city on Sept. 29, is for a remodel of an existing commercial building in South Sacramento.

Austin, Texas-based Tesla (Nasdaq: TSLA) is taking 11,060 square feet of space for Tesla Semi and Tesla car repair, along with some ancillary office use, according to its application.

The location will not be open to the public and only employees will be allowed, according to the application.

Tesla didn’t respond to email seeking comment on the location, which is at 8470 Belvedere Ave. between Power Inn Road to the west and Florin Perkins Road on the east.

It is an area of logistics and warehouse uses, and it is about a mile north of the Sacramento Pepsi bottling and distribution plant, which took delivery of 21 Tesla Semis in the spring this year.

It was the largest delivery of Tesla Semi trucks anywhere at the time, and the ones destined for Sacramento were among the first to roll off the assembly line, Pepsi said in April.

PepsiCo Inc. (Nasdaq: PEP), based in Purchase, New York, operates a bottling and distribution center off Gerber Road in the Florin area.

Pepsi ordered 100 Tesla big rigs five years ago. Tesla delivered 21 trucks to Pepsi by April, along with Tesla charging stations and a Tesla battery storage system to manage current draw from the local utility so it wasn’t taking power during expensive peak load times.

Pepsi took possession of the first Tesla Semi in December, and its fleet grew to 21 trucks by April.

Pepsi in Sacramento is still at 21 Tesla Semis, the company said in an email. Those 21 trucks have driven a total of 680,000 carbon-free miles in their first five months, Pepsi said.

The Sacramento Pepsi operation has a total of more than 100 heavy-duty trucks in its fleet.

The Tesla Semi trucks deployed out of Pepsi Sacramento run two different routes. They run long-haul routes of transport between 250 and 520 miles per run, and they also run 18 different local delivery routes where the trucks cover less than 75 miles per day, Pepsi said.

The local Pepsi operation has 624 employees. It sells and distributes PepsiCo products throughout the greater Sacramento area, up to Redding, the Sierra Foothills and Vacaville.

Tesla has car dealerships locally in Sacramento and Rocklin and a demonstration drive location in Elk Grove.
