The application period has opened for regional food entrepreneurs to be featured at select Sacramento Kings events this year as part of the organization's Capitalize: Food contest.

In 2016, the Kings launched the Capitalize competition as a way to showcase regional startups and offer cash prizes. Earlier this year, the organization announced it would be expanding the contest series with two new programs, including Capitalize: Food.

The inaugural food contest — which aims to highlight regional startups, culinary entrepreneurs and chefs with innovative food products — opened its application period on Tuesday.

"Capitalize: Food will celebrate the creativity and passion of culinary talent throughout the Sacramento region and we look forward to discovering the diverse talent in our community and sharing their creations with Kings fans and beyond," said John Rinehart, Sacramento Kings president of business operations, in a news release.

Select applicants will pitch their products or restaurant brand to a panel of executives, investors and industry leaders. Following a pitch day, the pool will be narrowed to four finalists, who will then compete in a cook-off at Golden 1 Center's kitchen.

The contest's winner will get an opportunity to have their food or restaurant brand featured at Golden 1 Center for select home games during the upcoming NBA season, in addition to being showcased during the organization's upcoming media food tasting event this fall.

Businesses eligible to apply must be located within 70 miles of Golden 1 Center. The application period runs through Aug. 18.

Capitalize: Innovation, the third contest that's part of the organization's expanded competition series, is expected to launch in 2024.
