An electric vehicle charging station company is doubling down on its investment in Sacramento, with six new chargers in the central city before the end of the month.

The city of Sacramento announced Wednesday it had partnered with Los Angeles-based EVgo Inc. to launch new curbside high-powered charging stations at 14th and E streets. New chargers at 22nd and J streets should be available soon.

“I’m thrilled to welcome these new EVgo stations in my district,” City Councilmember Katie Valenzuela said in a statement. “As we move toward a more sustainable future and shift away from fossil fuels as a city, we must remain focused on ensuring everyone has access to new technologies. These community charging stations will make it easier for people who cannot access charging at home to choose electric vehicles, including folks like me who live in a multifamily building.”

EVgo’s pilot program to install curbside chargers on city property launched in Sacramento in 2019, at Southside Park. That is now one of EVgo’s most-used stations in the country, according to the city news release. EVgo (Nasdaq: EVGO) now has a total of 15 chargers at five charging stations throughout the city.

“We’ve really enjoyed working with the city and it’s clearly an important market,” said Jonathan Levy, chief commercial officer for EVgo.

He said traffic to Sacramento’s EV chargers is driven by travelers to and through the city, as well as the popularity of ride- and car-share services.

Levy said EVgo has partnerships with ride-share companies, as well as the Gig Car Share service, which uses an all-electric fleet of Chevy Bolts in Sacramento. Sacramentans have been fast to adopt the car-share service since it first launched with 260 cars here in 2019.

“We’re actively expanding across the country and across the state, and Sacramento continues to be one of the areas that we’re developing in,” Levy said.
