Sacramento was one of the top regions in the country for growth in technology job listings last month, according to an advocacy group for the tech industry.

Sacramento had 2,373 tech job openings in April, up 26.3% from 1,879 positions being sought in March, according to the Computer Technology Industry Association, also known as CompTIA.

“Nearly 500 jobs is a pretty significant jump,” said Steve Ostrowski, a spokesman for Downers Grove, Illinois-based CompTIA. “The total isn’t that high compared to larger cities like Los Angeles, but it’s a lot for a smaller market."

CompTIA's survey included only technical information technology positions, Ostrowski noted. “These are not marketing positions at a tech company; these are hardcore tech jobs.”

This year through April 30, Sacramento has seen a total of 7,700 employer job postings for IT positions, which put Sacramento at 34th among all metro areas nationally, he said.

Tech workers are in demand all over the country, and they tend to command high pay. In the Sacramento region in 2020, the estimated median tech wage was $90,482, which is 75% higher than the median metro wage, according to CompTIA, which gets its information from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Most of the total of 75,288 IT positions in Sacramento as of the end of 2020 in were in tech occupation jobs. Those are jobs working in the IT department of some other kind of company. Sacramento had 51,923 tech occupation jobs in 2020 compared to 41,571 tech industry jobs. The figures don’t add up because there is a 44% intersection of those employees.

The leading tech occupations in Sacramento last year were IT support specialists, with 12,092 positions in the market, followed by software, programming and web developers, representing 9,770 jobs in the market.

The net tech worker employment in the Sacramento region represents 6.9% of the overall workforce, according to CompTIA’s year-end report on Sacramento. The number of people working in the tech industry locally is actually a lot higher, however, because the industry also employs marketing, sales, accounting and other types of job classifications.

The top cities for tech job postings are New York, Washington, D.C., Dallas, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, Atlanta and San Jose.

California is the state with the highest number of tech job listings at 45,361 in April, followed by Texas with 29,049 and New York with 14,805.
