Glen Allen’s The TriMech Group, which offers engineering services like 3D design and rapid prototyping, has acquired Mako Design + Invent, a physical product development company for small businesses based in Austin, Texas.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Chip Hogge, chief strategy officer at TriMech and president of its advanced manufacturing business, said in a statement the acquisition will form a foundation for a new product development line of business at his company.

Mako offers services for startups and other small businesses to help bring physical products to market, starting with planning, strategy development, design and prototyping all the way to manufacturing and scaled production. It has in-house industrial designers and mechanical and electrical engineers.

Mako founder Kevin Mako will join TriMech, providing leadership in its newly expanded product development services team, the companies said.

"Tapping into [TriMech’s] team of design-for-manufacturing experts, prototyping and manufacturing facilities and advanced software will help us ensure the best solutions for our clients," Mako said in a statement.

The TriMech Group counts more than 750 employees at more than 50 locations. It says it has more than 30,000 clients. It is owned by New York private equity firm Sentinel Capital Partners.

Mako has employees in Toronto, Miami and San Francisco in addition to Austin.
