Richmond consulting company Sandbox has moved to new digs in the city’s Arts District.

The firm, which provides outsourced human resources, financial services and other work to startups, set up in 4,000 square feet of space at 316 W. Broad St. at the start of June. The two-story office property is owned by New York’s Mercer Street Partners, whose portfolio includes 15 office, residential, commercial and hotel properties in Richmond and Petersburg.

Sandbox, led by co-founding partners Jill Lemon and Liz Doerr, previously occupied coworking spaces inside Startup Virginia’s Michael Wassmer 1717 Innovation Center, located about a mile and a half southeast of the new offices.

The firm, which now counts 21 staffers, said it had outgrown its old space and needed more square footage to accommodate new hires.

Sandbox and Mercer Street began working together in 2022 when the real estate investment firm tapped the Richmond company to conduct recruiting work.

Founded in 2018, Sandbox says its services are focused on helping venture-stage and venture-minded companies navigate back-office duties associated with operating and scaling a business. It says it takes a “team-based approach” to consulting, helping with finance, accounting, human resources, recruiting and business operations.

Last year, Sandbox and Richmond IT staffing company Daybreak Solutions partnered to create an IT staffing firm for startups called EarlyBird.
