Virginia State University, MedCerts team up on certification programs

MedCerts is partnering with VSU on certifications in health care and information technology.

Virginia State University in Petersburg is partnering with online training company MedCerts to offer certification programs in health care and information technology.

MedCerts, based in the Detroit area, is a subsidiary of Stride Inc., an online education company headquartered in Northern Virginia. The partnership includes more than 35 short-term training programs that can lead to credentials and certificate programs, the university said.

Terms of the partnership were not disclosed.

"This collaboration with MedCerts is a crucial component of our strategy to expand the VSU academic infrastructure to include industry-recognized professional certifications,” Tia Minnis, interim provost and vice president of academic affairs at the historically Black university, said in a statement. “It aligns perfectly with our overarching mission to provide continuous workforce development and employment readiness for our students and residents across the commonwealth in the health care and information technology sectors, two fields that are pivotal to the region's economic growth."

Last year, MedCerts launched a partner solutions brand focused on building partnerships to bridge the gaps between students, job seekers, employers, higher education and workforce agencies. MedCerts also works directly with enterprises to create customized education plans to help companies train and reskill their employees.

Stride acquired MedCerts in 2020, amid a Covid-19 pandemic boom in online learning. MedCerts posted $19 million in revenue for the 12 months ending Sept. 30, 2020.
