Great Minds, a Richmond-based ed-tech company that develops K-12 curriculum, is laying off 79 employees as the year comes to a close.

The company, which moved its headquarters from D.C. to Richmond in 2020, said in a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification filing with the state in November that the impact date of the layoffs is Dec. 31.

Donna Brown, interim general counsel for the company, told me the layoffs are part of a “strategic move to streamline certain operations.” The impacted workers are remote and are located all over the country, with just two of the 79 in Virginia, she said.

As of Wednesday, roughly 1,400 people listed Great Minds as their current place of work on LinkedIn.

Founded by Lynne Munson in 2007, the company offers English, math, science and history curricula for schools and homeschoolers. In addition to its Richmond headquarters, it also maintains offices in D.C. and Farmington Hills, Michigan.
