Richmond senior services startup Naborforce is expanding into Northern Virginia.
The company offers a tech-based platform that links aging adults to a network of "nabors" for social companionship, engagement and on-demand support with errands, transportation, help around the house and other tasks like setting up an iPhone. Each companion is vetted to ensure safety and quality. The companions are usually people over 55 and think of the work as more like volunteering than a job, founder and CEO Paige Wilson told us earlier this year.
The company closed a $9 million Series A round in August led by Palo Alto, California’s Translink Capital to fund its expansion into new markets. Wilson told Richmond Inno in September she had aims to expand the platform into 10 new markets by the end of the year.
Naborforce said it decided to expand into Northern Virginia because of “the increased demand by older adults in the area” for the services it provides. Its new areas of coverage include Aldie, Alexandria, Annandale, Ashburn, Burke, Centerville, Chantilly, Clifton, Dunn Loring, Fairfax, Falls Church, Fort Belvoir, Great Falls, Herndon, Leesburg, McLean, Oakton, Occoquan, Poolesville, Reston, Springfield, Sterling, Vienna and Woodbridge.
It's a further expansion into Greater Washington, as the company already makes its on-demand services available in Bethesda, Potomac and Rockville. It is also operating in Richmond, Charlottesville, Williamsburg and Atlanta.
Older adults or their family members are able to sign up for Naborforce and schedule visits online or over the phone. There are no contracts or length-of-visit requirements beyond one hour, and the company says family members can receive updates, notes and photos from a “nabor” during their visit.
