Ocean State Update: The biggest Rhode Island innovation news from July

Let’s take a look.

  1. Warwick-based eNow, a provider of mobile solar systems for commercial transportation, raised $4.6M in equity in a $6M funding round, per an SEC filing.
  2. The Providence-based, meal-delivery service Feast & Fettle acquired Bountiful Kitchen, a prepared meal and delivery service based in Newton.
  3. Ocean State Shields, a company that provides disinfected personal protective equipment to businesses and schools, has been accepted into a global business accelerator hosted by Newchip. Of the over 1,400 companies that applied, Newchip accepted less than 10% into its program. 
  4. Ten micro-design businesses recently graduated from the 2021 Providence Design Catalyst program, a five-month experience that provides each company with up to $15,000 in grant funding, business mentorship and business training.
  5. Citizens Financial Group, Rhode Island’s largest state-headquartered bank, announced in a press release that it will acquire the New Jersey-based Investors Bancorp for $3.5 billion.
  6. The wind energy company Arctura recently announced in a release that the U.S. Department of Energy has awarded it a $1.15 million phase IIB SBIR grant. The grant will help the company bring to market a new type of coating for wind turbine blades that lessens the damage from being struck by lightning. 
  7. ExecutiveGov is reporting that the Naval Undersea Warfare Center Division Newport has teamed up with the Rhode Island-based nonprofit organization 401 Tech Bridge to organize a $50,000 competition for tech companies “to design an unmanned surface vehicle for waterside security operations.”
  8. The Naval Undersea Warfare Center Division Newport has awarded the Middletown-based engineering consulting company, SEACORP, a five-year, $36 million contract, the company announced earlier this month.
  9. Providence-based Bally's Corp. announced in a press release that the company and Gamesys Group both obtained approval from shareholders for the two casino operators to merge. 
  10. The Lifespan Cancer Institute has appointed Stephanie Graff to serve as director of breast oncology.
