Ocean State Update: The Biggest Rhode Island Tech & Startup News From June

Let’s take a look.

  1. The energy company PPL Corp. announced that David J. Bonenberger will serve as president of The Narragansett Electric Co. upon PPL's planned acquisition of the Rhode Island utility company. Bonenberger currently holds the title of vice president of operations integration.
  2. After raising $500,000 nearly a year ago in what it described as a pre-seed round, Intus Care, an analytics-driven startup meant to improve patient care and lower costs in long-term care facilities, has closed another $1.65 million in venture capital financing.
  3. Newport-based 11th Hour Racing, a company that "works with the sailing community and maritime industries to protect and restore the health of the ocean," announced that is received $1.92M in grants. 
  4. MAP Health Management, an addiction peer support services company, has expanded its reach to 22 new markets including Rhode Island, according to a release.
  5. The Providence Journal reported that Rhode Island College was awarded $5.9M from the House Finance Committee to aid in rehiring faculty and strengthen its academic core. 
  6. The technology studio Newlab and the offshore wind development company, Ørsted, announced the launch of the Blue Energy Studio, an initiative designed to drive innovation towards a future powered by renewable energy.
  7. National Grid, an electricity, natural gas and clean energy delivery company unveiled its new EV Road Trip. The provider is planning a $200M initiative to raise awareness around the location of charging infrastructure and accelerate adoption of electric vehicles across Rhode Island, Massachusetts and New York.
  8. The multidisciplinary geotechnical and environmental firm, GZA GeoEnvironmental, has helped the renewable energy company Kearsarge Energy successfully develop a 2.8-megawatt solar energy array on a former petroleum storage facility. This development will generate 3.5 million kilowatt-hours of electricity yearly, or enough to meet the needs of more than 300 typical Rhode Island households.
  9. The Rhode Island-Israel Collaborative, an organization that promotes and strengthens trade, business, academic exchange and research between Rhode Island and Israel, celebrated its 4th birthday in early June.
