Ocean State Update: The biggest Rhode Island tech & startup news from March

Let’s take a look.

  1. Artist Republik, a platform helping independent artists grow their careers on their own, won Rhode Island Inno’s annual Tech Madness Competition.
  2. Lenoss Medical, a Bristol-based medtech startup developing natural treatment for osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures, raised $1.3 million of a $1.4 million funding round, according to an SEC filing.
  3. Limber Up, which created a product and venture to combat social isolation and emotional health impacted by the pandemic, won the New England Medical Innovation Center’s first ever hackathon. Info Center won second.
  4. Lotus Noire, an online wellness clinic for Black, Brown, and LGBTQ populations, is partnering with the Rhode Island Department of Health to provide a "one-stop shop" Covid-19 clinic.
  5. Knack, a Barrington-based travel bag startup, raised $258,000 in a $600,000 round, according to an SEC filing.
  6. Newport startup Siren Marine and Yamaha Motor Corporation have formed a strategic alliance, accelerating the adoption of Siren Marine’s connected boat technology.
  7. The Providence-based startup Pangea.app recently participated in Y Combinator, the same accelerator that has churned out unicorns like Stripe, Airbnb and Coinbase.
  8. Meet the entrepreneurs in DESIGNxRI's 2021 Design Catalyst cohort, which provides up to $15,000 in seed funding to local design entrepreneurs, plus a dedicated mentor and a business education program developed specifically for the design field.
  9. Researchers at the University of Rhode Island have developed a new, saliva-based Covid-19 test that will soon be put into use across its campuses as a screening and surveillance tool for the virus.
  10. Providence Business News is reporting that the City of Pawtucket has launched a forgivable loan program to assist small businesses hit hard by the pandemic.
