Newport-based innovation hub Innovate Newport hosted Rhode Island Inno's 2019 Startup to Watch event on May 9.

The evening, which boasted nearly 200 guests, was a celebration of those startups dubbed Rhode Island Inno's Startups to Watch in a January-published editorial.

These 19 entities were named to this list for a few reasons, ranging from fast-paced scale to representation in national pitch competitions, funding rounds or by receiving significant grants and awards. Then, of course, there are those startups who are doing something so unique that they're worth keeping an eye on.

Four of those startups took to the metaphorical Innovate Newport stage with me to discuss their entrepreneurial journey thus far. They were Mighty Well, represented by co-founder Maria del Mar Gomez; Power Docks, represented by founder Anthony Baro; Medley Genomics, represented by CEO and co-founded Patrice Milos; and Sree Dasari, CEO and founder of Vadati VR.

Specifically, we discussed the inspiration behind their startups, how the Rhode Island ecosystem helped their development, and some of the best advice they've ever received as entrepreneurs.

Some key takeaways? Rhode Island's ecosystem is in the middle of a huge time of movement and growth. That asking for help from people in this uniquely connected and friendly ecosystem is paramount to advancing your work. Diversity (as evidenced by the organically assembled panel) is one of the area startup community's strengths. And yes, access to capital is still an issue in the Ocean State.

After the panel discussion, attendees were able to ask questions of the speakers, enjoy refreshments and networking and were even able to take a first look at the beautiful Innovate Newport space.

This evening could not have been the success it was without you, dear attendees and readers, showing up and engaging so powerfully.

Lastly, I would be remiss not to thank our sponsors, Rhode Island Inno founding partner Cox Business, Venture Cafe Providence, and Amica Insurance, as well as Innovate Newport for hosting us.
