One Oregon company — just one — made a list of 250 "Top GreenTech Companies of 2024" compiled by Time magazine with help from Statista, the data portal.
It's ZincFive, which makes nickel-zinc battery systems that provide emergency backup power. The Tualatin company bills its technology as a better alternative to lead-acid and lithium-ion batteries, on power density, safety and sustainability counts.
“We are elated by this recognition, which underscores the sustainability-driven innovation inherent in our technology,” Tim Hysell, ZincFive CEO and co-founder, said in a news release.
ZincFive made initial inroads in traffic control systems but has expanded into data centers and other IT infrastructure, industrial engine starting and other use cases. The company announced $80 million in debt financing last year, bringing its total funding to $139 million.
The company, which had 186 employees as of late last year, was a 2023 Portland Business Journal Makers & Manufacturers Award winner.
As for the Time list, it was "based on … positive environmental impact, financial strength, and innovation," the magazine said, adding: "To determine these, Statista analyzed data points such as value of the company's intellectual property portfolio, revenue and funding, and environmental data specific to each industry, such as carbon capture, offsets, and renewable energy generated."
