A Portland health care company that had begun expanding its footprint five months ago is laying off staffers.

The Oregonian reported Tuesday that Brave Care, a pediatric clinic operation, will lay off a third of its staff. None of the 40 staffers losing their jobs are clinical staffers, according to the O, and its four local clinics will remain open.

The provider cited pandemic effects as well as the current difficult climate in which health care companies must function as the primary layoff drivers.

The PBJ reported in March that Brave Care looked to expand nationally, having opened an Austin, Texas, locale.

Brave Care had sought to use money from a $25 million funding round, led by Mednax (NYSE: MD), a national medical group and provider of physician services based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Having raised a total of $43 million, it had planned to open 100 clinics in partnership with Mednax’s Pediatrix Medical Group over the next three years.

Dr. Corey Fish founded the clinics, which operate for 12 hours a day and offer remote care around the clock, in 2018. His goal, according to a PBJ story, was to treat 75% of what can be done in ERs at much lower costs.
