Portland virtual receptionist company Ruby is once again expanding its footprint, this time to Texas where it plans to hire more than 100 people.

The company is hiring in Texas for fully remote receptionists to join its team. This is the second state the company has opted for a remote workforce. It tried this option in Arizona last year after it acquired Scottsdale chat company Pure Chat. The company hired about 100 people in Arizona last year.

“Ruby has embraced a flexible work model supporting in-office, hybrid (where appropriate), and remote options,” said CEO Kate Winkler in a written statement. “We like to target specific geographic regions to gain access to unique skills, types of roles, bilingual capabilities, and also broader access to more diverse populations. We concentrate our hiring in states so that we can manage the various labor laws and rules within each state/region.”

The company has more than 450 receptionists across Oregon, Washington, Missouri, Kansas and Arizona and is hiring across its geographic footprint.

Ruby provides virtual receptionist and chat services for more than 14,000 businesses across the country. Prior to 2020 the company was fully office-based with its receptionists working in one of three locations in the Portland area. However, the Covid-19 pandemic forced the company to shift to remote work and it proved effective.

The company has adopted a fully remote or hybrid work environment allowing employees to work in a location, either office or home, that best suits them. Ruby has more than 600 employees total and has been a fast growing company for years. The company had $61.7 million in 2020 revenue.

The company has a large customer base in Texas so prioritizing receptionists in that state made sense, Winkler said. The company is holding a virtual job fair on March 3. More information on the job fair is available online.

Winkler said that Oregon continues to be Ruby’s home base and an important focus of the company.
