Portland software maker Puppet has tapped a longtime Cisco exec as its new chief marketing officer.
Gene Hall, who spent more than 20 years at networking company Cisco Systems (Nasdaq: CSCO), joined Puppet and will lead Puppet's marketing as the company works to expand its customer reach into more Global 5000 companies.
Hall was most recently CMO and vice president of security marketing for Cisco. It was his experience in the business-to-business and enterprise space that drew Puppet.

“Gene’s extensive experience leading global teams of marketing professionals for over two decades, along with his extensive security background, make him an ideal fit for Puppet’s leadership team,” said CEO Yvonne Wassenaar, in a written statement. “As Puppet continues to modernize and scale to meet customer infrastructure needs, especially in today’s hybrid work environment, Gene’s strategic leadership will be instrumental.”
At Cisco, Hall led a global marketing team and helped drive the business-to-business security group to more than $3 billion per year in revenue.
“Throughout my career, I’ve been hyper-focused on customer engagement and experience,” Hall said in a written statement. “Puppet understands the importance of meeting customers where they are and delivering world-class solutions to help them meet their business goals. The company already has an amazing track record and I'm committed to helping it reach its huge potential.”
Puppet makes software used to automate certain IT activities for system administrators. The company helped usher in the DevOps trend, where companies combine development and operations capabilities to develop and release applications faster.
Earlier this year the company also named vice presidents of global business development and product.
