Portland’s SheerID named tech finance veteran John Ewert as chief financial officer.

Ewert will oversee the company’s finance, legal, information technology and business operations and report to CEO Jake Weatherly.

Ewert, who was a Portland Business Journal CFO of the Year in 2016, has become a familiar face around growing Portland tech companies. He was most recently CFO of Nvoicepay, a Beaverton-based payments company. While there he helped the fast-growing company through a $208 million sale to Fleetcor Technologies (NYSE: FLT) in 2019.

Prior to that he was CFO of Elemental Technologies and helped that company sell to Amazon Web Services in 2015 for $296 million.

“John brings decades of executive leadership experience building teams, scaling global operations, and driving growth in world-class organizations,” said Weatherly in a written statement. “He is the perfect business partner to oversee our financial strategy, as we remain focused on growing revenue and enterprise value.”

Along with Elemental, and later AWS Elemental, Ewert was vice president of finance at Palo Alto Networks where he led that company’s IPO team. His resume also includes roles at PwC, Sun Microsystems and Oracle Corp.

SheerID makes software used by brands to verify consumer identities and then market discount deals to certain groups such as teachers, students and military personnel. It has more than 160 employees. The company saw revenue jump 54% last year compared to 2019.

In a written statement Ewert said he is excited to join a company like SheerID that is changing how brands connect with consumers.

“I am glad to be part of an executive team that is so focused and passionate in meeting the evolving needs of our customers, partners, and stakeholders,” he said.
