Portland-based Pensole and Allbirds have partnered on a six-week design class that will result in two three-month internships at San Francisco-based Allbirds.

Like with previous programs, Pensole hopes to attract students from underrepresented groups, including historically black colleges and universities.

The program, called Better Responsible Design, is accepting applications until May 24. It will focus on teaching students environmentally friendly design.

"I first started Pensole to open up some of the same opportunities I've had throughout my career to students whose talent might have otherwise been overlooked," said Pensole founder D'Wayne Edwards, in a news release. "We're encouraged to see Allbirds invest in the potential of these designers and look forward to working together to help spur a sustainable revolution in design."

There is no cost to apply and there are no prerequisites.

"The next generation of designers will be instrumental in developing the kind of innovative solutions required to push the footwear industry toward a more sustainable future," said Allbirds co-founder and co-CEO Tim Brown, in the news release. "It's of the utmost importance that we create an inclusive space for creative ingenuity to flourish, and we could not have found a better partner than Pensole to help us achieve this goal."

Edwards founded Pensole in 2010. Since then, it's become a go-to source for footwear and design brands seeking more diverse workforces.

In March, Pensole announced a similar program with VF Corp. that will result in five yearlong apprenticeships.
