A new master's program that will be offered at the University of Pittsburgh in the new year is pitching itself as one of the most affordable options in the nation and it's also designed for those who don't have any technical backgrounds.
The 20-month, 30-credit, online-only program from Pitt's School of Computing and Information will have a tuition cost of $15,000. It lacks a formal application process other than the requirements that students have a bachelor's degree and obtain a "B" grade or higher in an initial, three-credit course.
Enrollment in the program will open on Feb. 12. The first classes are set to begin in May with a full course load expected by fall 2024. Classes will be held on Coursera, an online learning platform.
"Our [master's in data science program] removes entry barriers, reassesses admission processes, and harnesses technology to deliver an exceptionally accessible program that embodies Pitt’s high-quality, internationally recognized education," School of Computing and Information Dean Bruce Childers said in a statement. "SCI is embarking on this new online degree program because we realize the importance of providing access to data skills and knowledge inclusive of all learners."
Those who complete the degree in data science at Pitt will learn skills and analytic tools, gain insights on how to pose and answer questions with data and complete projects as part of a portfolio that can be used to showcase their progress with potential employers.
According to job board and employer review platform Glassdoor, data scientists placed as the No. 3 best job in America in 2022 and the field has consistently placed in the top 10 on this list for several consecutive years.
