Time magazine has identified the 100 leaders of artificial intelligence around the globe in 2023, and Pittsburgh-area resident Sunil Wadhwani and his brother Romesh Wadhwani have made the cut.
Time specifically brought attention to the Wadhwanis for their founding of Wadhwani AI, a nonprofit institute based in Mumbai, India. The organization works to bring scalable artificial intelligence-based solutions to sectors like agriculture, education and health care in underserved communities.
The billionaire brothers invested $30 million into the formation of Wadhwani AI in 2018, which has since gone on to garner $60 million in financial commitments to date, Time noted in its report.
Sunil Wadhwani is known in the Pittsburgh business community due to his involvement with Moon Township-based digital transformation and IT services firm Mastech Digital Inc., which he co-founded and now serves as the company's co-chairman. Wadhwani also co-founded and served as the chairman and CEO of IGate Corp., which was sold in 2015 to French IT services giant Cap Gemini for $4.5 billion.
And, last March, a Bridgeville-based tech firm that has ties to Wadhwani raised $13 million in funding via an equity offering, according to public SEC documents.
