State awards millions for EV chargers

Officials in Harrisburg have begun rolling out millions of dollars in federal funding for the build-out of electric vehicle charging stations throughout the commonwealth and the Pittsburgh metro area is poised to benefit.

The funding is being made possible due to the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, which established $5 billion for the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) formula program and $2.5 billion for the Discretionary Grant Program for Charging and Fueling Infrastructure. The two programs will offer funding to states that can find partners that can install EV charging stations throughout their borders.

Over the next five years, Pennsylvania is set to receive $171.5 million in NEVI-related funding for this effort, which initially is focusing on building direct current fast-charging stations along select interstate highways and roads that will eventually contribute to a national EV charging network. Once Pennsylvania fulfills all of the requirements of this initiative, then it will be able to award funding to EV charger buildouts on any public roadway or any publicly accessible location.

Here's where funding is being allocated on a county basis in the Pittsburgh metro:
