An Aliquippa-based multi-service transportation company is celebrating the onboarding of its first battery-electric semi-truck into its Pittsburgh fleet of vehicles.
It marks the first of 100 Tre battery-electric vehicles (BEV) that PGT Trucking Inc. plans to add to its operations in the coming years following its partnership with Nikola Corp. (NASDAQ: NKLA), a Phoenix-based heavy-duty battery-electric commercial vehicle manufacturer.
"With the addition of the Nikola Tre BEV to our Pittsburgh fleet, we will be poised to service local customers with the most cutting-edge and sustainable equipment on the market," Gregg Troian, president of PGT Trucking, said in a prepared statement.
A single Tre BEV truck has a range of up to 330 miles, and Nikola said it can recharge from a near-empty battery to about 80% of its capacity in a little under three hours.
PGT said it plans to deploy this first Nikola truck for use locally. By its estimates, PGT said short-haul deliveries made by this truck alone will eliminate more than 105,000 pounds of the company's carbon emissions annually.
Throughout the rest of the year and into 2024, PGT is expecting to acquire the other 99 vehicles via the lease agreement it signed with Nikola.
