Powercast partners with Israeli firm to develop short- and long-range wireless power systems

Powercast, a Pittsburgh-based developer of wireless power-over-distance systems, is teaming up with an Israeli firm operating in the same industry to create short- and long-range wireless power designs for different applications and consumer electronics.

According to Powercast, the team-based collaboration with Powermat will rely on the former's engineering and productizations services to create wireless charging devices that are to be more convenient and sustainable for consumers.

Radio frequency-based products from Powercast are capable of supplying long-range, over-the-air power supplies to devices up to 120 feet away but at very low levels that range from a few hundred milliwatts to single-digit microwatts depending on the distance, like for IoT devices or other low-level electricity-consuming products. Powermat's tech does the opposite, providing higher levels of power but at distances not to exceed about half a foot, like for smartphones and other consumer electronics.

"The convenience of a one-stop-wireless-power-shop has not existed before," Charles Goetz, CEO of Powercast, said in a release. "First, since our partnership covers the entire spectrum of wireless power, customers can ditch researching solutions themselves and relax knowing we'll recommend the best fit for them. Second, whether you're a startup or Fortune 500, our productization team can help reduce costs and speed time to market."
