Saxonburg-based Coherent Inc. announced the launch of a new laser technology that the company said will improve the efficiency of electric vehicle battery and motor manufacturing.
Coherent (NASDAQ: COHR), which until recently went by II-VI Inc. before undergoing a name change following an acquisition, claims that its new HIGHvision machine vision system for laser welding heads allows for ultra-high accuracy when welding components of batteries and motors found in EVs. This lowered costs of ownership while preserving quality and reliability, Coherent said.
"What makes our laser welding solution with HIGHvision among the fastest and most accurate on the market is that we designed laser welding heads specifically around an embedded vision system architecture," Karlheinz Gulden, senior vice president of laser components and subsystems at Coherent, said in a prepared statement.
Coherent said its library of processing applications for its HIGHvision product will continue to see additions over time, increasing its overall portfolio of materials processing solutions in the process.
The release of Coherent's HIGHvision product for use in the manufacturing of EV parts comes as the demand for EVs continues to climb around the world. A report in the Japan Times estimates that the global demand for EVs in 2035 will surpass 24 million vehicles, a figure that's nearly double the expected demand of the 13 million gasoline-powered vehicles that are likely to be sought that same year.
