Duolingo Inc., the East Liberty-based language learning tech unicorn, has appointed Mario Schlosser to its board of directors.
Schlosser has a background in health insurance technologies, mobile gaming and artificial intelligence.
"Mario's background as a founder of a consumer tech company, his foundations in computer science and his experience pioneering AI innovation make him a great addition to our board of directors," Luis von Ahn, co-founder and CEO of Duolingo, said in a prepared statement. "Mario's leadership experience and international perspective will help Duolingo on our mission to develop the best education in the world and make it universally available."
Schlosser co-founded technology-based health insurance company Oscar Health in 2012 and served as CEO for over a decade through April of 2023. He now serves as its CTO, a position he will continue, as well as sitting on that company's board of directors as well.
Schlosser oversaw the implementation of AI to Oscar's platform through a partnership with OpenAI. Duolingo launched an AI-powered subscription tier last year and will expand its AI usage.
Before his time at Oscar, he co-founded Latin American mobile game company Votsu, which for a period in the 2010s was the largest Latin American social gaming company.
"I have always been passionate about language and gaming and am thrilled to contribute as a board member and a power user," Schlosser said in a prepared statement. "I love the Duolingo product and the potential for technology in education."
Schlosser holds an MBA from Harvard Business School and a degree in computer science with highest distinction from the University of Hannover in Germany.
