The robotics and AI industry continues to thrive in Pittsburgh, as evidenced by this year’s List of Robotics and AI Companies, which just published, along with the annual List of Cybersecurity Firms in the region.
More than 11,000 people are employed at the top 25 firms on the Robotics List, led by Amazon.com Inc., which has its machine learning development office in Pittsburgh among its total employment.
In addition to Amazon, The Robotics Institute at Carnegie Mellon University also hit the 1,000 employee mark.
Carnegie Mellon's robotics influence will soon increase even more, with the the City of Pittsburgh approving plans to build a 150,000-square-foot research facility in Hazelwood Green, slated to open in 2025.
Aurora Innovation Inc., (with 800), Google (800), Aerotech Inc. (550) and Emerson Electric Co. (500) also topped 500 employees in the robotics/AI space, among 16 firms with more than 100 workers, up from 14 last year.
Aurora recently received $820 million in additional funding and said it is confident it will deploy its commercial self-driving truck before 2025.
Aerotech recently doubled its cleanroom space as part of an expansion to keep up with its growth, as it added 120 employees from last year’s List.
Space robotics company Astrobotic Technology Inc. ranked No. 12 on the List as it awaits word of when its lunar lander will be launched to the moon.
The List continues to deepen, with 44 firms listing at least 10 employees in robotics, automation and AI.
Through the List, there were companies focusing on autonomous vehicles, shopping/retail automation, industrial applications, language learning (Duolingo Inc.), virtual reality, health care settings, testing, construction, creating a wide robotics/AI scene in the region.
