Metafy, a Pittsburgh-based startup that provides one-on-one video game coaching for players, announced it acquired a British-based competitor called GamersRdy.
As part of the acquisition, Metafy will add more than 100 coaches from GamersRdy's platform, a move that will allow the company to expand its live-learning content offerings to players who are members of the platform. Before the acquisition, GamersRdy had 20,000 active users since its 2018 launch.
The company did not disclose additional details, including financial terms, of the deal.
"I’m so impressed with the coaching team and community Alex has curated at GamersRdy," Metafy CEO and Co-Founder Josh Fabian said in a statement, referencing GamersRdy owner and head of experience Alex Gilmore. "Metafy has a lock on the best 'Super Smash Bros.' coaching in the world, and we’ll be able to say the same for 'Rocket League' by bringing GamersRdy’s talent into the fold. Just like our students, we’re constantly asking ourselves how we can be better, and we’re all excited to move forward together and continue growing."
Founded in 2020 by Fabian and Thomas McNiven, Metafy pairs private, one-on-one coaching sessions from champion-level coaches to individuals who play video games like Fortnite and including physical board games like chess. It has more than 12,000 students on its platform and online bookings have climbed 53% month-over-month on average since January. Coaches on the platform, some of whom Metafy claims rank among the world’s top 1% of players themselves, create their own schedules and set their own rates.
In May, the company announced it expanded its original December 2020 seed funding round of $3 million to a total of $8.6 million.
