Blackbird Health, a Pittsburgh-based technology company that provides mental health services to children and young adults, has raised $17 million in a Series A funding round.

The Butler Street company said in a statement the funding round was led by private equity firm Define Ventures and also included Frist Cressey Ventures and GreyMatter. The latest raise is part of $22.7 million Blackbird Health has raised since the company began, according to a U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission filing on Feb. 15.

Blackbird Health began in 2014 and was started by Amy Edgar but was relaunched in 2021 with the participation of Dr. Matt Keener, a child and adolescent psychiatrist. The company offers a combination of virtual and in-person therapy, medication management, developmental support and speech and language treatment for children and young adults. Its website shows clinical services offered in Allentown and Jenkintown in eastern Pennsylvania and Vienna, Virginia, outside Washington, D.C.

The company said it's providing timely access to mental health services for youth at a time when there's a shortage.

"Blackbird Health epitomizes the future of mental health care, a future defined by innovation and a dedication to significant cost reductions and superior outcomes, and I see tremendous opportunity for its personalized, technology-driven solutions and steadfast focus on understanding the underlying drivers of mental health," said Define Ventures Partner Chirag Shah.
