Pittsburgh saw its second-highest fundraising year on record in 2023, solidifying to many the region’s status as a premier technology hub. Beyond the investment, historic advancements have continued to be made across the board in the fields of artificial intelligence, robotics, autonomous vehicles and more.

But technological innovation doesn’t happen overnight. Rather, it is driven by innovators and entrepreneurs pouring their time, sweat and tears into ideas they are passionate about. Likewise, these ideas don’t just happen in board rooms, but also in dorm rooms and beyond.

When selecting this year’s list of 10 Startups to Watch in 2024, we consulted with industry experts and looked at a variety of factors, including size, scalability, investments, team background and, most importantly, one basic question — how is the company pushing us toward the future?

Those pushes come in big forms and small forms. Some of the companies featured on the pages that follow have received millions of dollars in investments, while others are actively raising seed rounds. Some are seeking to address massive problems that affect all of us, while others are focused on a deeper niche.

Ultimately, however, these technologies all could have a significant impact, and the companies selected have exceptional potential in the year ahead.
