Commercial waste recycling provider RoadRunner Recycling Inc. raised a $70 million Series D funding round in January 2022, the region’s second-largest round over the past year. It brings the startup’s total funding to $129 million since its founding in 2014 by CEO Graham Rihn. The company specializes in providing businesses with waste and recycling services while guaranteeing that customers will save money. It currently counts over 6,000 businesses across 18 cities as customers. With new capital, RoadRunner expects to expand to even more regions. The company employs over 400 workers, and Rihn has said the startup expects to have its payroll top 800 by year’s end.

What does it feel like to raise the amount of funding your company has raised thus far?

I tend not to marvel in the amount of money we’ve raised to date. We are super focused on living out our mission, so most of my thought cycles are about seeing that through. That said, I’m proud of where the company is today and very thankful to our great partners who’ve invested in RoadRunner.

How will this funding further grow the company?

The funding will allow us to propel our growth across the country and continue to build out the technology that bolsters RoadRunner as the industry leader in sustainable waste management.

What role, if any, does Pittsburgh play in your company’s efforts to secure funding?

I think Pittsburgh’s early stage scene is an exciting one. From my experience, the city has passionate past entrepreneurs that want to help the next generation of Pittsburgh founders. This dynamic is the foundation of what can be a really vibrant early stage community. I hope to play a part at some point in the future.
