From the get-go, Kelley Benson is informing startup founders on the importance of injecting diversity, equity and inclusion into their enterprises. As the vice president of human resources and inclusion at Innovation Works Inc., one of the region’s largest seed-stage investment firms, Benson meets directly with founders from startups in IW’s portfolio to coach them on how to best incorporate different DEI initiatives, from ensuring there is diversity in the C-suite via talent acquisition practices to providing educational materials on leadership development or compensation benefits. By working directly with startup founders, Benson is equipping the region’s innovation ecosystem for a more just and inclusive future.
What do you think makes for a successful Pittsburgh startup?
It’s talent, talent, talent! … Companies want access to great talent. Talented people want to work in a great culture doing important work. All seek a high quality of life, with diverse opportunities as well as a diverse, inclusive team that challenges them.
What is a challenge for Pittsburgh’s startup community, and how could it be addressed?
The ability to hire the right employees, especially when it comes to competing for the same talent with stiff competitors. When a company has the ability to hire deserving talent, retention remains key. Now, baking in diversity, equity and inclusion is a challenge all must work to include. How does one build in DE&I? Begin to build your pipeline prior to needing the talent. Seek talent among the abundance of universities and technical programs, and conduct informational calls to allow potential employees to learn more about your company. Once employees are hired, you have to be intentional about the employees’ needs and will have to meet or exceed their expectations in order to keep them.
What has you most optimistic about the region’s startups in the years to come?
I am optimistic about the region’s desire to foster DE&I.
