Two Pittsburgh-area firms are considered to be among the greatest employers in the nation's tech sector, per the findings of a new study.

That's according to U.S. News & World Report, which released its annual "Best Companies to Work For" list and subsequent lists of employers by various industries such as energy, financial services and health care in addition to the aforementioned tech sector.

Canonsburg-based engineering software simulation company Ansys Inc. (NASDAQ: ANSS) and Saxonburg-based optical and semiconductor manufacturer Coherent Corp. (NYSE: COHR) are the two firms located in the Pittsburgh region that were featured on the "Best Technology Companies to Work For" list.

Ansys, which also appeared on the overall "Best Companies to Work For" list, received additional praise and its highest marks for its work/life balance, work environment and professional development opportunities as part of its profile page featured on the list.

To determine its industry-based rankings, U.S. News considered public companies in the Russell 3000 stock market index as of June 2023 that had at least 75 U.S.-based reviews posted on Glassdoor, an employer rating platform, between 2020 and 2022.

This methodology differed slightly from U.S. News' overall "Best Companies to Work For" list, which only looked at firms in the Russell 1000 stock market index that had at least 75 U.S.-based reviews posted on Glassdoor in 2022.

For both types of lists, U.S. News also looked at metrics involving compensation, work/life balance and professional development opportunities to determine the companies that made the cut. U.S. News did not rank any of the 200 companies it picked to fill any of its lists.
