Carnegie Mellon University has topped a national list of schools that have the most graduating students who land a job at a major tech company.
According to College Transitions, an online admissions consulting provider, CMU bested all other schools when accounting for the total number of employees hired at tech firms who have a degree from a U.S.-based college or university.
For its analysis, College Transitions sourced public data from nearly 175 million LinkedIn accounts in the U.S. to identify the undergraduate backgrounds of over 70,000 entry-level engineering and IT workers employed across 12 American tech companies like AirBnB Inc., Google LLC, Meta Platforms Inc., Microsoft Corp., SalesForce Inc., Snap Inc. and Twitter Inc.
It then made two lists out of these findings: One that factored in the total overall alumni employed at these tech firms and another that adjusts placement based on enrollment figures to give smaller schools a more equal weighting factor compared to larger schools. Each list also provides the top overall employer for alumni from these schools as well as the employer with the largest concentration of alumni from each respective school.
CMU took the top spot on both lists.
Per the findings, about 1,350 CMU undergraduate alumni work at these 12 tech companies. Google is the tech company employing the most undergraduate alumni from CMU as more CMU alumni work at Google than at any of the other tech firms analyzed for the report. Meanwhile, DropBox is the tech company with the highest share of employees from CMU, as CMU graduates comprise a larger share of all employees at Dropbox compared to any other company analyzed.
The University of Southern California, the University of California at Berkeley, the Georgia Institute of Technology and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign rounded out the top five schools by total alumni employed, respectively. Columbia University, Stanford University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the California Institute of Technology completed the other top five rankings on the list that adjusted placement based on undergraduate enrollment.
