Tech Parks Arizona — the organization responsible for connecting the University of Arizona and its research with technology companies to spur innovation and collaboration — has filled three executive roles, including executive director of the UArizona Center for Innovation (UACI).

Taking the helm of the Center for Innovation is Casey Carrillo, who has been assistant director since her promotion from program manager in early 2022. She has also previously worked at the McGuire Center for Entrepreneurship in UArizona’s Eller College of Management.

Carillo will work with Tech Parks Arizona director Anita Bell to advance UACI programs. Tech Parks cited Carillo’s leadership and vision in its announcement about her promotion.

Also at the UACI, Eric Smith was named chief innovation officer. In that role he will focus on the growth of the center through enhanced funding opportunities and strategic corporate partnerships.

The Center for Innovation, which started in 2003, serves dozens of companies working in therapeutics, medical devices, software, fintech and other industries. Many of them have a connection to UArizona through an alumni, faculty member or technology transfer from the school, but others come from connections to other universities, from the federal government, or from entrepreneurs out in the community.

The center is open to startups at all stages of development, and the incubator program is tailored for each to meet the needs and existing skills of the individual company. It takes applications on an ongoing basis, so long as it has the resources to serve interested startups.

Tech Parks Arizona also announced Patrick Murphy’s appointment as chief operating officer. He brings an extensive background in operations, construction and facilities management that will be crucial to the organization, the announcement said.

In addition to overseeing the UACI, Tech Parks Arizona directs the UA Tech Park at Rita Road and is developing the UA Tech Park at The Bridges, both in Tucson.
