Arizona has a few more companies than last year on the latest Inc. 5000 list of the fastest-growing private companies in the nation, and one Valley tech company made the top 10 nationwide.
Scottsdale-based Brander Group Inc., a brokerage for internet addresses, led the pack in Arizona to rank No. 6 in the nation with 27,096% revenue growth over the past three years.
Inc.’s coverage included a feature on Brander and its CEO Jake Brander, who founded the company at age 31 in 2016. That was in time to catch a wave of new demand for internet addresses just as the world’s original supply of those addresses was running out.
The company uses a system it created to identify all the world’s IPv4 addresses and searches for dormant ones or others whose owners may be willing to sell to the company, which in turn sells them to customers needing addresses.
"We feel good because everybody has benefited from this, and the global Internet which we all rely on daily is able to continue to grow at a pace that is considered normal,” Brander told Inc. “If there were no IPs that were available for sale, the internet would have to stop rolling temporarily. And that's the truth.”
A total of 116 Arizona-based companies were on Inc.’s 2021 list, making this the third-straight year with an increased number for the Grand Canyon State, up from 107 last year and 104 in 2019. This year’s number is down a bit from the 121 companies that made the list in 2018.
The yearly ranking tracks companies’ self-reported revenue growth, and highlights those with the highest percentage growth during the previous three years. Growth from 2017 to 2020 was measured this year.
Companies in all sectors
Brander was one of two Arizona companies in the top 100 and one of 14 in the top 500. The next highest-ranking company was Clutch Solutions, a computer software and hardware provider that operates out of Gilbert and saw three-year growth of 6,999%.
The others in the top 500 were Tempe-based Arizona Custom Blends Manufacturing at No. 138, Tempe-based Icon Power at No. 146, Phoenix-based BIM Designs at No. 148, Tempe-based Kayo Energy at No. 175, Tempe-based Pomchies at No. 221, Phoenix-based Paradigm Laboratories at No. 224, Scottsdale-based Paradox at No. 225, Phoenix-based RallyUp at No. 323, Mesa-based Phusion Rehab at No. 325, Phoenix-based me4kids at No. 346, Scottsdale-based AMB Wellness Partners at No. 403, and Avondale’s StaffNow at No. 475.
Overall, Arizona companies on the list had 167% median growth over three years, with a total revenue of $11.8 billion and total jobs added of 6,086, according to the magazine.
Also, 10 of the Arizona companies on the list were newly founded, and 59 were repeat honorees.
The overwhelming majority of the Arizona companies on this year’s list are based in the Valley, with a handful from other parts of the state, including four in Tucson and one each in Flagstaff and Lake Havasu City.
