Ambler-based human resources startup Phenom acquired German tech startup Tandemploy, adding to the company’s growing presence in Europe and abroad.

The acquisition will add a second German office to Phenom’s growing European footprint, which includes offices in the Netherlands, Israel and the United Kingdom. Phenom also has offices in India. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Berlin-based Tandemploy’s technology features an algorithm that matches peers, mentors, project leaders and subject-matter experts using skills-based data and each person’s individual goals. Tandemploy’s staff will join Phenom, including its co-founders and co-CEOs Anna Kaiser and Jana Tepe, who have led the company since its founding in 2013.

Phenom has been intentional about its expansion into Europe, hiring several executives in late 2020 to lead its operations in Central Europe and across the U.K., Ireland, Northern Europe, the Middle East and Africa. The company in a blog post said it would continue “aggressively recruiting” in 2022 in Europe as it expands operations.

Phenom’s employee headcount in Europe topped 100 as of October, and it is unclear how many Tandemploy workers will transition to Phenom through the acquisition.

“[Tandemploy’s] extensive influence, remarkable technology and renowned company culture fit seamlessly with Phenom and will rapidly accelerate our growth in EMEA,” Phenom CEO Mahe Bayireddi said in a statement.

Phenom's startup’s valuation reached $1.4 billion last year after the company raised a $100 million Series D to double its employee count. Bayireddi told the Philadelphia Business Journal in 2021 that there’s “no doubt” that the company would go public in the future.

Tandemploy, meanwhile, is not Phenom’s first European acquisition. The startup previously acquired Munich-based TalentCube last March and Amsterdam-based career website developer Endouble in 2020 for undisclosed sums. Phenom also bought My Ally, an artificial intelligence startup headquartered in Silicon Valley, in September 2020.

Phenom specializes in connecting businesses and job seekers. Its Talent Experience Management platform uses AI, data and machine learning to streamline the hiring process from recruiters to candidates. Phenom’s technology is used by companies spanning 134 countries, the startup said.
