The Hawaii Agricultural Foundation, or HAF, is gathering a group of leaders from the local beef industry for the next Eat Think Drink event.
Titled "Beefing Up Hawaii: Grazing Toward Increased Production," the event will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. June 26 at the Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Hookupu Center in Honolulu. It will include a panel discussion with the industry leaders that will delve into how the industry has shaped Hawaii agriculture, as well as a dinner featuring locally sourced beef.
According to the HAF website, the event will “explore the unique challenges facing Hawaiian beef producers, from high production costs to limited processing facilities and competition with imports,” as well as the “ innovative approaches being undertaken to address these challenges and capitalize on opportunities for growth.”
Kyle Caires of University of Hawaii’s College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources will deliver a keynote address. Participants for the panel discussion will include Nicole Galase of Hawaii Cattlemen's Council, Timothy Luton of Maui Cattle Company, James “Jay” Nobriga of Nobriga Ranch and Maui Soda & Ice Works Ltd., and Ryan Torres of Y. Hata & Co., Ltd., with Taylor Kellerman of Kualoa Ranch Hawaii moderating.
"We're excited to bring together stakeholders from across the industry to discuss the important role of beef production in Hawaii’s economy and culture," said Denise Yamaguchi, executive director of HAF, in a statement. "And we look forward to offering community members a venue for an engaging and meaningful conversation that can help drive positive change in our agricultural community."
HAF launched Eat Think Drink in 2016 in an effort to raise awareness about food issues, and the series takes place quarterly.
