The City and County of Honolulu has created the new role of chief data officer and appointed Kira Chuchom to the position.

City officials announced her appointment in a release last week, noting that the role entails performing what officials called “vital work” on behalf of the city, “including providing top-level staff and executive assistance to the mayor and managing director and overseeing the city’s data management, protection and dissemination efforts.”

According to city officials, Chuchom will develop a “comprehensive strategy to ensure effective and efficient handling of data across all City and County of Honolulu departments.” She will work to analyze data dealing with issues including affordable housing, homelessness, public safety, permitting and more.

“This role is not only about leveraging technology; it’s about bringing people together to collaborate on crucial issues to find solutions,” said Chuchom in a statement. “There is incredible potential to streamline, accelerate and enhance our city services on behalf of the deserving residents of Oahu.”

According to the announcement, Chuchom has worked at companies including Microsoft and Cisco Systems. She also previously served as a management information systems manager for the City and County of San Francisco.

“We welcome having Kira’s expertise and insight going forward in how we invest taxpayer dollars into our city operations,” said Mayor Rick Blangiardi in a statement.
