Hawaii Energy — the state's Public Benefits Fund administrator focused on clean energy initiatives — recently announced it is extending the application deadline for the 2023-2024 EmPOWER Grant program. Hawaii Energy will accept applications on a first-come, first-served basis until funds are exhausted, according to the announcement.

Originally set to close on Sept. 29, nonprofits, small businesses and restaurants may continue to apply for a grant of up to $6,000 for energy efficiency projects, which may cover up to 100% of project costs, as previously reported by PBN.

“Hawaii Energy made the decision to extend the deadline for the EmPOWER Grant program in order to maximize funding opportunities for more local businesses that are interested in reducing their energy usage, and ultimately, their operating costs," Caroline Carl, executive director of Hawaii Energy, said in a statement. "We encourage eligible businesses to apply now while the funding lasts."

EmPOWER Grant funds may be used to cover the following energy efficiency project expenses:

  • New energy efficient equipment
  • Parts, accessories and other materials for installation
  • Labor for old equipment removal, site preparation and installation
  • Shipping costs for materials and equipment
  • Taxes for the above items

To qualify, applicants must be a commercial rate schedule account holder of an electric utility on the island of Hawaii, Lanai, Maui, Molokai or Oahu. Applicants must also complete the installation with one of Hawaii Energy’s participating contractors. Businesses must fall into one of the following categories: 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, restaurant, small businesses with electric rate Schedule “G" or small businesses with a facility of less than 5,000 square feet, according to the announcement.
