Hawaiian Telcom recently announced it has completed its fiber internet expansion throughout the island of Lanai. The company's fiber internet, known as Fioptics, has the fastest upload speed in the state at up to 500 megabits per second, according to the telecommunications provider.

“We’re pleased to have reached this important milestone of completely enabling Lanai with fiber during our 140th anniversary year of serving Hawaii,” Hawaiian Telcom President and General Manager Su Shin said in a statement. “Broadband is the foundation for growth and innovation, which is especially important for our rural communities. It unlocks new possibilities for Lanai residents and businesses as the island is being redefined as a self-sustaining community.”

This announcement follows Hawaiian Telcom's recent launch of an $87 million fiber broadband project to expand throughout the state's middle mile infrastructure, which carries large amounts of data over long distances, as previously reported by PBN. Since 2010, the company has invested more than $1 billion to expand its fiber footprint, according to Hawaiian Telcom.

Lanai residents may qualify for free internet service through August 2024, courtesy of the Hawaii Department of Transportation's HI Connect Broadband Project, according to the announcement. Residents and businesses can visit Hawaiian Telcom's website to check if their location qualifies for Fioptics.
