ProService Hawaii has acquired Makai HR in a deal that brings together two local human resources companies.

The companies announced the acquisition in a joint statement on Wednesday. The financial details were undisclosed.

According to their respective websites, ProService Hawaii serves more than 2,500 businesses and 44,000 employees, and Makai HR has about 200 business clients that represent 4,000 employees.

Representatives for the companies told PBN in an email that Makai HR currently has 26 employees, and ProService Hawaii has 380. According to the statement, all of Makai HR’s staff — including the executive team — will be retained and will join ProService.

In a statement, Ben Godsey, CEO and president of ProService Hawaii, said the company is “thrilled” to grow its team and client base with the acquisition.

“With ProService, Makai’s clients will have access to more and better offerings in the years to come. … We look forward to working together as we accelerate our technology development,” Godsey stated.

The acquisition announcement follows last week’s news that ProService has entered into a new investment partnership with Silver Lake, a global technology investment firm. At the time, Godsey told PBN that the partnership will help drive the company’s growth and improve its technology.

In an email to PBN, Makai HR President Marci LaRouech said the company’s “clients will benefit in so many ways” by the deal.

"First, with Silver Lake's deep investment and tech expertise, we will be able to continue to lead the market innovating the best HR tech solutions uniquely built for Hawaii employers,” LaRouech said. “I am also excited about the expanded set of complimentary HR services all our clients will be able to tap into — the best leadership, professional development and safety training in the state; benefits, insurance and workers' comp counsel and advocacy; legal and compliance counsel. All of these HR solutions, enabling tech and program expertise will directly improve the value we can bring client employers and all their employees."

Makai HR launched in 2018, established by Dustin Sellers, who also previously worked for ProService.

In the announcement, Sellers stated, “I am so proud of this team of individuals in what they have accomplished through so much change and growth.”
