Technology education nonprofit Purple Maia Foundation is launching various online courses this month on topics that include cybersecurity, game development and more.
“Our technology programs foster student engagement, expression, and leadership,” said Purple Maia founder and CEO Donavan Kealoha in a statement. “Students explore their world through imaginative digital arts and math content and make connections with guest experts.”
Here’s a look at the courses that will run over the next several weeks:
- Minecraft Wahine: Conquering new spaces in Minecraft - Java Edition. It runs Jan. 18 to Feb. 22 from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. on Wednesdays for ages 7 and up
- Minecraft Advanced Players: Overcoming new challenges in Minecraft - runs Jan. 20 to Feb. 24 on Fridays from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. for ages seven and older
- Kaulua Courses: Introduction to Cybersecurity - covers the basics of encryption and more. The course runs Jan. 23 to Feb. 27 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays, for ages 11 and over.
- Makahiki Scratch - interactive game development through the Scratch platform. The course runs Jan. 23 – Feb. 27 from 3:30 – 5 p.m. on Mondays for ages 10 and over.
- Kai Hohonu – Students will learn the tools and technologies used for deep ocean exploration using 3D modeling platforms. It runs Jan. 23 – Feb. 27 from 5 - 6 p.m. Mondays and from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Thursdays, open to ages 9 – 14.
- Tech Tuesday – Students will develop a pizza-themed game using block code. The session runs Tuesday, Jan. 24 from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. for ages seven and older.
