All-natural beauty brand Malie Organics is switching to post-consumer recycled material for its product packaging.

The Kauai-based company announced this week that they will utilize post-consumer recycled material — which is made from recycled products such as plastic water bottles — in an effort to reduce plastic pollution.

“Malie is using materials that would be going into a landfill and instead giving them a second life, which can then be recycled again for future use,” the company said in a statement.

Malie introduced the new packaging for its shampoo and conditioner earlier this month.

Owner Dana Roberts told PBN that these are “the first two products to switch over since they are Malie’s best-sellers and had the biggest impact on minimizing single-use plastic.”

But eventually, Roberts said, she plans to make the switch for the company’s various offerings, and they’re currently working on new packaging for cream, body wash and hand soap.

“It is very important to me that Malie makes educated choices that have a positive effect on our environment, thus reducing our carbon footprint,” Roberts said. “We have always been natural and organic with our ingredients, so it only made sense that we started using post-consumer recycled materials for our packaging.”

Roberts founded Malie Organics in 2004 and has since grown the brand to include three boutiques on Kauai and Oahu. Plus, its products are sold in dozens of other retailers.

Roberts declined to disclose the cost of the new packaging but noted that the new material does raise expenses for the company. “Switching to the new material did cost more, but to me it is well worth it,” she said.

“This is just one step in a long-term plan to make more environmentally-conscious changes,” Roberts said. “We will also be reducing boxes, eliminating hang tags and doing what we can to cut down on packaging in the products overall. In addition, we are creating more refill options for collections of products coming in.”
