Treehouse Coworking is expanding, with a new location set to open Dec. 14 in a 4,000-square-foot space in Kahala Atrium, across from Kahala Mall.

It marks the second location for the coworking brand, which launched in Kailua in 2017.

Co-founders Dawn Hunt and Keno Knieriem told Pacific Business News that they hope the new space will allow them to help more small businesses and entrepreneurs.

“Our vision was just to continue to … help people build their business and be part of their community,” Hunt said. “We have met so many different types of people just within our little Kailua nook — hundreds of members have come through … and we just love getting to know everybody. We think it’s such a fun and unique way to broaden your network and your experience. … It’s been great working with like-minded people, and so we hope to bring that to Kahala as well.”

“Our mission as a business is to help diversify Hawaii’s economy through small business, and we have focused on building a community in Kailua. We love Kahala … and it’s another neighborhood that has a lot of business owners,” Knieriem added.

Treehouse Kahala, which will be nearly twice the size of the Kailua location, will be comprised of 13 executive suites, 10 micro-offices, indoor and outdoor coworking areas, and three high-tech conference rooms. It also will feature a coffee bar, along with limited offerings from Solar Shack, the coffee and health food concept they launched earlier this year at Treehouse Kailua.

The company’s current membership spans a wide range of industries, including law, the arts, real estate, finance and tech.

Hunt and Knieriem said that the new location will enable them to reach new businesses and entrepreneurs in other parts of the island. Treehouse currently has more than 100 members at the Kailua location, and they anticipate that they will be able to add about 150 new members in the new space.

Hunt and Knieriem admitted that the pandemic has presented challenges for Treehouse including temporary closures, suspension of event programming, and delays in opening the Kahala location. But despite that, they’ve seen increased demand.

“We have noticed that there are more people wanting to cowork, and there are more people that have the option to work from home. Of that, there is a certain group of people who want to separate their work life from their home life a little bit,” Knieriem said. “And we have found during Covid that people get lonely … and it’s nice to have other people to commiserate with, or celebrate with.”

Different tiers of memberships are available, and applications are being accepted now for Treehouse Kahala. Anyone who pre-books by Dec. 31 will receive 20% off their membership for the first three months.
